A North African Mixtape
A celebration of music from North Africa with a special focus on Libyan and Moroccan artists. We compiled this mixtape during the 2023 earthquakes in the region, sending our thoughts to those affected by the tragedies that struck. We’ve asked our community to recommend some organizations and charities to donate to in order to support the relief efforts.

Arabic Pop: Hamid El Shaeri
Hamid El Shaeri is an Egyptian-Libyan singer, songwriter and producer who’s considered to be one of the leading figures in Arabic pop – and the “al Jeel” genre.
Born in Benghazi, El Shaeri started his music career by founding a band called Sons of Africa in the 1970s. He later moved to Egypt, where he released his first solo album Ayonha in 1983, and then a second in 1984 titled Raheel. Habibi Funk included the song Ayonha on a 2017 compilation. El Shaeri has also produced hits such as Ali Hemeida’s Law Leki, and Hisham Abbas’s Ainy.

ولد في بنغازي، وبدأ مسيرته الفنية في السبعينيات بتأسيس فرقة “أبناء أفريقيا” الموسيقية ثم إنتقل بعد ذلك إلى مصر، حيث أطلق ألبومه الأول “عيونها” في سنة ١٩٨٣، ثم ألبومه الثاني “رحيل” سنة ١٩٨٤
أعاد حبيبي فنك سنة ٢٠١٧، إطلاق أغنية “عيونها” باستخدام تقنيات البرمجة الحديثة. وقد أنتج الشاعري أيضًا أغاني لعدد من المطربين مثل أغنية “لولاكي” لعلي حميدة، وأغنية “عيني” لهشام عباس
