What’s on Emmy-Nominated Composer Kareem Roustom’s Playlist?

We’re always curious to ask our Quatertones podcast guests what they’ve been listening to lately. Who doesn’t want to know what an Emmy-nominated composer has on their Arabic music playlist?

Composer of Contemporary Arabic Classic Music

Kareem Roustom is a Syrian-American composer, musical director and university teacher whose music is multifaceted, contemporary and genre-crossing. Over his career, he’s collaborated with Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and created arrangements for Shakira and Tina Turner – to name a few. He has been nominated for an Emmy a number of times for his documentary and narrative scores for films presented at festivals such as Sundance, Cannes, and Tribeca. Our Quartertones conversation with the composer delves into the history of Arabic Classical music, how it’s perceived, and key figures who pioneered the genre, including Sayed Darwish and Sabah Fakhri.
